I am delighted to be joined for the first ever Songs Behind the Music website exclusive interview by Danish power duo 100%WET, who tomorrow release their hotly awaited new single 'Over Me'. The track sees Jakob Birch (guitar and production) and Casper Munns (guitar and production) continue their journey into a genre blending world which they have coined "hypergaze". This combines elements of hyperpop, shoegaze, and 90’s breakbeats into a sound so unique that you cannot help become hooked from first listen. The video for the track dropped today, a day before it becomes available to stream worldwide, so be sure to check it out below and get it into all of your playlists tomorrow.

To celebrate the release of new music, and also tease their upcoming album, I was joined by the hypergaze duo to hear about the songs that shaped them. Jakob and Casper spoke about tracks from their childhood, all the way up to their own proudest songs, to reveal a number of the 'Songs Behind' 100%WET.

Favourite Song to Play Live:

'Warmblooded - 100%WET'

"The song I enjoy playing the most is probably a song called Warmblooded of our album. But of course it also depends on the mood you are in and the given night you are playing and stuff like that. It should be said that our album isn't released yet, it's coming out in the spring."

Song That Reminds You of Your Childhood:

'Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac'

"A song that really reminds me of my childhood is ‘Little Lies’. I remember doing gymnastics on the floor with my mom and my sister listening to this song."

'Movin' on Up - Primal Scream' & 'Feel - Robbie Williams'

"I think there's two songs that comes to mind when thinking about my childhood. One of them is Primal Scream’s ‘Movin' On Up’ which I remember dancing around the living room to. Then the first song I ever cried to was Robbie Williams with ‘Feel’. I didn't understand the lyrics or anything, but it just made me cry."

First Album You Brought:

'loveless - my blood valentine' & 'Revolver - The Beatles'

"The first record I bought on vinyl was probably my bloody valentine's 'loveless'. At the same record store I also bought ‘Revolver’ by The Beatles on CD, which really annoyed my dad because he's a Rolling Stones fan."

'Yabba-Dappa-Dance! - Compilation' & 'Bleach - Nirvana'

"The first album I bought was probably something really shitty, like a shitty 90s compilation of dance music. I think something like ‘Yabba-Dabba-Dance!’. I remember buying a cassette with Nirvana's ‘Bleach’, which I think was when I started forming my own music taste, and not just buying what you thought other people were listening to."

Song That Made You Want to Be a Musician:

'Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana'

"I think the song that made me want to be a musician was maybe ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’."

'Led Zeppelin Compilation Album'

"Yeah, Smells Like Teen Spirit is a good one, but otherwise I would have to say Led Zeppelin. Not as specific song, but getting a greatest hits compilation with Led Zeppelin was probably the moment I decided I wanted to play guitar."

Song That Gets You Through Hard Times:

'#3 - Aphex Twin', 'anything - Adrianne Lenker' & 'loomer - my blood valentine'

"That really depends on which kind of hard times, but maybe ‘Rhubarb’ by Aphex Twin, or #3 as it is also called. Something really emotional and slow. Or Adrianne Lenker, ‘anything’. Something sad and feely. Unless it's catharsis that you're looking for, then maybe my bloody valentine, like ‘loomer’ for example."

'Either/Or (Album) - Elliot Smith'

"Elliott Smith comes to mind. When I had some hard times recently I listened a lot to ‘Either/Or’ by Elliot Smith, a really beautiful album."

A Song You Would Have Loved to Write:

'...Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space - Spiritualized'

It's a tough one! Either way, Spiritualized's ‘...Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space’ comes to mind.

'Roygbiv - Boards of Canada' & 'Julia - The Beatles'

"I guess you can go down two different roads with this. Like a really cool song that I would have loved to have written is something like ‘Roygbiv’ by Boards of Canada for his vibe. But also you could go more singer-songwriter with a song like John Lennon's ‘Julia’, which I also think has some insane harmonic changes."

Song You'd Put On at a Party:

'Von dutch - Charli xcx', 'Good Lies - Overmono' & 'SOS - ABBA'

"If I was given the aux at a party, I would put on Charli xcx ‘Von dutch’, Overmono’s ‘Good lies’, or ‘SOS’ by ABBA. Guess it depends on the party, but if it's a dance party, I would agree with Jakob and say ‘Von dutch’ by Charli xcx is probably my go-to at the moment."

Favourite Song of all Time:

'loveless (album) - my bloody valentine'

"My favourite song of all time is an insane question to answer. When people ask me about my favourite album of all time, I'm a bit more confident in saying My Bloody Valentine’s ‘loveless’. But I don't know about my favourite standalone song. There's so many good ones."

Song You are Most Proud Of:

'Over Me - 100%WET'

Them all! No, I think our next single, ‘Over Me’. I'm proud of how that song turned out, because it was a really long and twisted process of merging together something very drum and bassy and dancy with something really more heavy and grungy. But somehow that seems to have worked out and I think it's still intriguing to listen to.
