Tenacious D:
Tenacious D may be a year deep into the 'Spicy Meatball' tour, but last night in Nottingham, The D' were still at their very best. The comedy-rock duo played a blistering 90-minutes set that brought as much laughter as it did sing-alongs. The epic setlist featured music from Tenacious D's first three albums, including several songs from the cult-classic film 'The Pick of Destiny', mixed with their brilliant cover of 'Wicked Game' and some 'Sax-a-boom' action.
Set-opener 'Kickapoo' sent the audience into a frenzy, and to the crowd's credit this energy level did not throughout the evening, as Tenacious D guided them through an evening of both comedic and musical brilliance. With hilarious songs like 'Low Hangin' Frult' and
'F*ck Her Gently' it can be easy to forget just how musically talented this duo are. They are joined on stage by three equally talented live musicians, who each added to the night in their own ways. Jack Black and Kyle Gass made sure every band member had their own moment in the spotlight, delivering rip-roaring solos before the main-set closed.
What was definitely a first for me, was seeing both a 'sound tech solo' and a 'lights solo', both of which had the audience in stitches. Amongst the humour, this also highlighted The D's' humility by ensuring everyone in their team had time in the spotlight, This was further enforced when Jack Black welcomed three of the bands' roadies onto stage after a huge performance of Roadie. Seeing this sort of chemistry across the entire Tenacious D team was brilliant, but there was still time in abundance for both Black and Gass to show their infectious characters, which were lapped up by the audience.
Black's vocals were as "F*cking powerful" as Master Exploder suggests, with his comedic timing ever-present between songs, whilst Gass was at his instrumental best, nailing guitar solos, and even a double recorder at one point! Kyle Gass' comedic nature is on par with Jack Black, with moments like the 'Max-a-boom' reveal and him mooning the crowd being rightly met with arena-filling cheers and laughter.
Overall Tenacious D's debut Nottingham show is one that will live long in the memory of all in attendance, for all the right reasons
