The Jockey Club Live summer is well under way, and that means Newmarket Nights is in full swing. The concert series has already seen Pete Tong's Ibiza Orchestra and JLS take over the July course, the latter of which I was lucky enough to attend. In the next few weeks James Arthur, Becky Hill and Deacon Blue will also be headlining, but last night it was the turn of the ever-brilliant Busted. As always with Newmarket Nights, all in attendance had the chance to witness a full card of racing before the concert. Then, as the sun began to set over the racecourse, it was time for Busted to take the stage, being greeted by rapturous applause from an adoring audience. What followed was a career. spanning set that proved the trio are as good as they ever have been.
A blend of 'Lose Yourself' and 'Thunderstruck' welcomed the band to the stage, providing the perfect hype music to build electricity in the crowd. However, once the introduction to 'Air Hostess' kicked in the energy reached stratospheric levels. Busted have over 20 years of crowd-controlling experience under their belt, constantly flexing these muscles last night to ensure every single person in attendance was having the time of their life. The loud responses from the crowd seemed to be so sincerely appreciated by Busted, who have reached a new level of appreciation from the music community since reforming; and a deserved appreciation at that.
The setlist was perfectly crafted, with plenty of timeless classics from the band's first two albums being showcased. Early songs like 'Loser Kid' and 'You Said No' sparked huge sing-alongs from the crowd, whilst timeless classic 'Sleeping With the Light On' created the stunning sight of phone torches lighting up the scenic July course. Amongst the classics Busted still found time to showcase new music, with recent release 'Good One' getting an equally large reaction. This is testament to Busted's longevity, and their ability to continually evolve as a band. It also emphasises just how strong a connection they have with their fanbase. This connection was continually on show throughout the night, with all three members interacting with audience members of all ages, making this a night to remember for so many people.
The connection between band and audience seems stronger an ever, but likewise the connection between all three members is truly palpable. The on-stage chemistry between the trio meant songs that sound great on recording are brought to whole new levels, whilst the talking between songs just got funnier and funnier. This connection also extends to live drummer Eddy Thrower, who brings another huge dynamic to the band, making them sound better than ever. Busted have been a relentless force since their 2016 come back, and last night proved they show no signs of slowing down. Pop-rock is well and truly back
