Ladyhawke @ Mash

Mash, Cambridge - 13/02/24

Ladyhawke:

Last night saw Ladyhawke bring her UK tour to MASH in Cambridge, in a night full of synth-backed indie brilliance. This tour has seen Ladyhawke play her self-titled debut album in full, before closing the set with some more recent favourites..

It has been 16 years since Ladyhawke released her debut album, yet it still sounds as fresh and relevant as any modern record. Once the record hits the stage it feels even bigger, highlighting the work of art it is ' Ladyhawke". Her multi-instrumentalist approach to live performances showcase just how talented a musician Ladyhawke is. She is joined on tour by the unbelievably talented Steven Weston and Nick Annis, creating a trio of musical brilliance that instantly had the crowd gripped. It is testament to how beloved Ladyhawke's music is, that even on this rearranged date, the crowd still turned up in their masses. It takes a real talent to build such a strong fanbase the other side of the world, but Ladyhawke has been doing this her whole career

Ladyhawke has a Chrissie Hynde type presence on stage; speaking few words, letting the music do the talking and looking a badass whilst doing so. Her recorded music has an energetic synth-pop feel to it, but the live performance helps showcase the individual components so much more. On several occasions Ladyhawke ripped into phenomenal guitar solos, a feature of her music that gets nowhere near enough credit. The chemistry between the band was radiant and the intimate setting of MASH made every audience member feel involved in this spellbinding performance

The album playthrough meant normal closers like 'My Delerium' and 'Paris is Burning' were played in the middle of the set, something that
could throw a lesser artists pacing and engagement of. Ladyhawke, however, has such depth in her writing that this instead provided a refreshing approach. Less common, but equally brilliant songs like 'Oh My' and ' Crazy World' to take a fully deserving leading role. This truly was a special night, guided by the genius mind of music's unsung hero
