Daði Freyr 'I'm Doing a Tour'

Cambridge Corn Exchange, Cambridge - 28/11/23

Daði Freyr:

After releasing the global phenomenon 'Think About Things' for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest Daði Freyr rose to worldwide fame and has never looked back. The Icelandic megastar, with his unique style of synth-backed music, has gathered a huge global fanbase; reinforced by his high energy live shows. Nothing has showcased this more than his current European tour 'I'm Doing a Tour: Part 23' which sees Daði travelling through the continent showcasing his newest release 'I Made An Album'. Last night this tour stopped at Cambridge Corn Exchange, with Daði and his band delivering night of synth-pop brilliance. Support on the night was provided by the brilliant Australian trio 'Blusher'.

Daði Freyr, joined by the incredible Ylva Øyen Brandstegg (drummer) and Hafsteinn Þráinsson (guitarist), walked onto the stage through the shadow of a giant inflatable Daði head. One of the best stage sets I have ever seen provided a perfect backdrop for a night full of mind-blowing musicality and hilarious adlibs. Never have jokes with the audience been carried out so beautifully. The nineteen song setlist (with some added heartfelt improv songs dedicated to lighting technician 'Alex') flew by, being packed full of Daði's best music, a new song preview and even a few covers.

As big a stage as the Corn Exchange may have, even this was not enough to contain the brilliance of Daði, with the catchy 'Sabada' bing sung from the venue's boxes. This was just one example of a host of memorable moments that happened throughout the night. Another that will live long in the mind was the preview of unreleased song 'I'm Not Bitter' which may be Daði Freyr's best work to date. If this is a sign of the future, the sky is the limit!

Expectedly the loudest reaction of the night came from the main-set closer, 'Think About Things'. Everyone was in full voice as Daði masterfully led the crowd through the iconic chorus. A cover filled encore topped the night off in perfect fashion. First a stripped back cover of McFly's 'Obviously' wowed the crowd, before Freyr's beloved cover of Atomic Kitten's 'Whole Again' closed the night. Covers in a concert can often split opinion, but when two iconic songs are reimagined in ways that give them whole new life, then in my eyes there can be no debate

It is incredible how easy it is to fall in love with Daði's music, even the songs sung in Icelandic and German were sung back by the sold-out crowd in full voice. You could not help but watch this set with a giant grin on your face and found your feet perfectly moving to every beat. Daði and his band turned the Corn Exchange into a love-fill disco; a celebration of just how positive music can be.
